Installing laminate flooringWood, laminate, vinyl, slate, tile, or carpet—the choices available in flooring style are dizzying. Each contributes its own brand of beauty and function to the home, but they all share something in common when it comes to keeping them looking new: frequent vacuuming with a quality system.

Did you know that one of the most important things you can do to maintain the life of your floor, no matter what it’s made of, is frequent vacuuming? It’s true. Dirt, grit, even dust break down fibers of carpets and create wear and tear on floor finishes, too. Even if you can’t see the dirt, if your vacuum cleaner has left behind a deposit of fine grit, or you don’t vacuum frequently, carpets and floor surfaces will age much faster, resulting in earlier replacement, not to mention floors that look worn or dingy. A central vacuum system picks up virtually all of the dirt on your floors and deposits it into a sealed container away from your living spaces; it’s the best choice for most effective cleaning.

Always vacuum thoroughly before cleaning any hard surface floor. This will not only allow for a cleaner floor but prevent scratching from scrubbing or buffing if dirt particles are left behind.

Consult your manufacturer for specific products and techniques when cleaning different types of hard surface floors. Use as little water as possible, and dry quickly and thoroughly, especially laminate floors. A fan is effective if hand drying with towels is difficult or impractical.

Vinyl floors are the easiest to clean and maintain—just vacuum and damp mop for routine cleaning, and use a damp sponge with dish soap for spills and messes. A nylon scouring pad will lift heel marks and scuffs. For more thorough cleaning, all-purpose cleaner applied with a sponge mop is fine for no-wax floors. If the floor looks like it has a filmy residue after cleaning, just mop with white vinegar and wipe down with clean water on a sponge to restore shine.

At the other end of the spectrum, wood floors require the most care, but some homeowners swear by their superior beauty and durability. Water should never be used on wood floors, except those treated with polyurethane. Pros say the best way to clean a wood floor is also the most time consuming. After first vacuuming, apply a small amount of liquid wood floor cleaner with a soft cloth, rubbing it into a small portion of the wood floor. Wipe away the excess, then move onto the next section. When the floor is dry, buff with a floor polisher. Use care with wood floor cleaners, and use only in well-ventilated areas, because they are combustible.

There are many reasons why I chose a central vacuum system for my home. Below are just some of them!

A whole-house cleaning system, my central vacuum does the job of an upright vacuum, canister vacuum, dust buster and even a shop vac.

Value and Versatility
A central vacuum system extends life of carpets and furnishings, increases a home’s resale value, improves indoor air quality, and saves time.

falling leavesAs cold weather approaches and living spaces are sealed tight against the elements, it’s even more important to reduce levels of indoor air pollution for the sake of your health and comfort. Here are some simple ways to freshen up your home for fall.

  • Fluff up curtains and draperies in your dryer on a low setting. If you have a steam setting, even better. You’ll be amazed at the dust that accumulates in the lint trap when you remove them. Add a dryer sheet as they tumble around to lend the drapes a subtle fragrance after you rehang them.
  • Wash, dry clean, fluff or replace decorative pillows, throws, table runners and tablecloths. These items tend to attract unseen dust and dust mites over time, which can aggravate allergies or asthma in sensitive people who eat or nap near them. A new season offers an opportunity to spruce up your home décor inexpensively with the fresh colors and textures of decorative fabrics, so consider replacing them altogether.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture, even on the undersides, if possible. This will help keep dust and mites at bay, especially if you own a central vacuum system. Don’t forget the nooks and crannies; use a wand tool to vacuum between cushions.
  • Clean out clothes closets.Coats and other clothing that hang unworn for long periods of time are simply gathering dust. Purge unwanted items for donation, then vacuum the floors of your closet and dust any shelves inside. Hang sachets of herbs, such as lavender or sage, for a pleasant fragrance that will help repel moths.

bedroom_MJCDKIYdMore and more research is showing us the critical importance of a good night’s sleep. Since quality sleep contributes significantly to our ability to strengthen our immune systems, ward off the harmful effects of stress and process nutrients efficiently, anything we can do to enhance the health of our sleep environment is worth the effort. A good mattress is a solid start. But I have always wanted to know how do we keep it clean and free of unwanted particulate matter that we breathe in during the night?

Your vacuum system is your first and best tool of choice for maintaining a clean mattress. A central vacuum system is the best choice for cleaning mattresses because its high efficiency suction and hose will remove virtually all particulate matter and transport it to an air-tight container away from living spaces.

Using an upholstery attachment, vacuum your mattress regularly to remove the significant amount of dust and dead skin cells that accumulate from sleeping bodies—up to several pounds a year! This will also reduce the number of dust mites that live in your mattress, which contribute greatly to allergy symptoms.

If you have allergies, consider also using a washable mattress cover that you can remove and launder in hot water. This will prevent a great deal of dirt and dust from penetrating your mattress and also kill dust mites living in the mattress cover.

If your mattress becomes soiled or stained, use an upholstery shampoo, following the directions exactly. Or mix mild detergent with water until suds form, and then apply only the suds to the mattress with a sponge. Be careful not to over-wet the mattress. Wipe the area with a fresh sponge that has been wrung out with warm water. Allow to dry thoroughly. Aiming a fan at the damp areas will speed drying and prevent further water stains.

Cleaning on the Road Doesn’t Need to be a Chore with the Vroom RV – Retract Vac

rv slideshow 2Chet and I recently invested in an RV for family road trips. We take a lot of trips to visit friends and relatives all over the country, and there’s just something about a road trip that brings the family closer together.  The family SUV is great for shorter trips, but isn’t always accommodating for cross-country or multi-stop adventures. Plus, we did the math and figured we would save money on hotels, airfare etc in the long run.

We took a few small trips to New England and the Outer Banks over the summer with the kids and Barkley (our puggle) in tow, and of course there were plenty of messes along the way. Initially I brought a small stand up vacuum we had stored away to handle some of the messes on the RV, and right away I realized that it just wasn’t going to work. I absolutely love our central vacuum system at the house and thought, “Why don’t we just get one of these for the RV?”

Thank goodness our good friends over at H-P Products and Dirt Devil have the perfect solution for any RV enthusiasts who need a quick, convenient solution for messes on the road. We had the Dirt Devil CV1500 installed in our RV along with the brand new Vroom Retract Vac attachment with a 35’ hose. I’m telling you right now, this is the best decision we made for our RV and our family. I can get around and clean the entire living space with ease. No lugging around a heavy stand up vacuum that can’t reach into the unique nooks and crannies we have on the RV, and the mess is gone right away, the first time I vacuum over it.

Of course, the kids tend to make a decent amount of mess in that small space and sometimes the crumbs from their on-the-go snacks get pushed into awkward corners of the RV that a traditional or handheld vac could never handle. I just open the cabinet under our kitchen sink in the RV, where the Retract Vac is installed, pull out the hose, and defeat the mess wherever it lies. No dragging several feet of hose or cords behind me, and when the mess is whisked away to the remote canister under our living space, the hose retracts right back into the base and is out of sight until the next mess.

Since Chet suffers from pretty bad allergies (as I’ve mentioned in previous posts) I have to do my best to get rid of dirt and dander from the dog pretty quickly. In our home, there’s enough space for both the dog and Chet to live in peace, but on the RV, they are crammed pretty close together, causing Chet’s allergies to fire up. Having a RV central vac on board made it easy for me to clean up after the dog every day and get rid of his hair before it aggravated Chet. Also, like our system at home, no particles are exhausted back into the air during use, keeping everyone happy and healthy.

I am so glad we have the same vacuuming system on board our RV that we have at home. It really does help our family feel more comfortable and like we never really left the house! For more information, check out

Want A 3-Second Spring Clean-up?

Spring gardenCoffee can tipped on its side this morning? Cereal spilled out of the box? Face powder covering your bathroom vanity? You can sweep up the mess in less time than it takes to find a broom.
Sounds too good to be true, but it’s actually possible with a nifty, under-the-counter vacuuming appliance that fits in a standard sized cabinet. Called Vroom, it includes a small but mighty power unit that houses an 18’ or 24’ hose, a hose nozzle that doubles as a crevice tool, an adjustable wand and a compact convertible floor/rug tool. The entire unit is only 16.25” H x 3.25” W x 17.86” or 21.86” D, depending on which length hose you choose.

I love that you simply pull the hose out to the length you need, and the unit automatically powers on. Clean the mess, and the hose retracts back into the unit. Done! Vroom can work with an existing central vacuum system or operate as a freestanding unit. Perfect for a quick cleanup of floors, drawers, surfaces, or around appliances.
